Obedience training teaches a dog to respond reliably to verbal and/or signal commands. A dog owner’s goal may be to have a well-behaved pet which would require the dog to learn very basic obedience skills such as walking on a loose lead, coming when called, and staying in a sit or down position when given the command.

Hunt tests attempt to duplicate real hunting situations. Gunners stationed out in the field shoot the birds. The dog relies on his sense of sight and smell to find his retrieve. Dogs must not be gun-shy and are expected to swim through decoys and cover such as reeds. In advanced tests, the dog may be required to stay with his handler in duck blinds, get into and out of boats, or run through heavy brush and gullies.

Rally obedience is neither traditional obedience nor traditional agility, but something between the two. In traditional obedience, the sequence of the exercises is specified in the rule book and is the same for each exhibitor. In rally obedience, like agility, the sequence will vary at individual trials but each exhibitor runs the same course. In rally classes, the dog and handler move continuously through a course of 10 - 20 numbered stations, performing the exercises indicated by a sign at each station. After the judge’s command to start, the team is on its own to complete the sequence correctly.

Therapy dogs are used to benefit the physical and/or emotional well-being of people. Generally, Animal Assisted Therapy is supervised by a health professional to augment physical therapy for a patient, while Animal Assisted Activity involves volunteers sharing their dogs with various populations to benefit their emotional health.
